The Challenge
Both continuous‑bleed and intermittent‑bleed pneumatic controllers are designed to vent gas to atmosphere during valve actuation, creating ongoing greenhouse gas emissions and product loss. In addition, pneumatic systems rely on air or gas as the driving medium, which can become contaminated by oil or lubrication—leading to downtime, maintenance intervention, and reduced reliability.
The Solution
Spartan Controls implemented Bettis™ RTS electric actuators, a non‑intrusive, intelligent, fail‑safe linear actuation solution for ON/OFF and modulating valve applications. The mechanically driven failure‑safe design provides selectable stem‑extended or stem‑retracted positioning on loss of power, eliminating the need for pneumatic media.
The RTS actuator delivers up to 10,116 lbs (45 kN) of electric thrust, supports ball, butterfly, plug, damper, and globe valves, and offers adjustable speeds with flexible mounting options. Integrated diagnostics and immediate feedback enable condition‑based maintenance, while native networking through DCMlink® software and Controlinc Network Master allows seamless digital integration—without requiring separate UPS, battery backups, or supercapacitors.
