Spartan Controls adds new ultra-low powered chemical injection pump to their clean-energy technology portfolio

September 15, 2017

CALGARY, ALBERTA – Spartan Controls Ltd. is pleased to announce the addition of LCO Technologies’ CROSSFIRE to their clean-energy technology portfolio. The CROSSFIRE is an ultra-low powered, high efficiency and cost effective chemical injection pump which eliminates venting of methane by replacing pneumatic-driven injection pumps.

Chemical injection pumps are used in the oil and gas industry to deliver accurate chemical injection rates into the wellbore and are often operated in remote locations. Traditionally, these fuel gas-powered (pneumatic) pumps are the largest piece of venting equipment at the well pad, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas (GHG), into the atmosphere. The CROSSFIRE Chemical Injection Pump offers 1-4 fluid ends, allowing it to replace up to four pneumatic chemical injection pumps with one unit.

“We are very excited to be representing this technology in Western Canada,” said Chris Breen, Manager, SCADA, Flow Computers & RTUs at Spartan Controls. “The CROSSFIRE is a cost-effective technology that can help our customers reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions on a well pad, and completely eliminate greenhouse gas emissions caused by pneumatic chemical injection pumps.” Breen stated, “Early customer response has been very positive with the low power draw, quiet operation and clean installation.”

It is estimated that up to 80% of methanol injection applications are over-injecting, resulting in lost savings. Sophisticated logic is built into the CROSSFIRE controller, allowing injection rates to be determined based on production flow or pressure. If a well is producing less, the chemical injection pump will throttle back automatically, reducing chemical usage, thus reducing operations cost.

“The CROSSFIRE is an ultra-low power device that can easily and reliably run in off grid, low power applications, even in Northern Canada where sunlight is unreliable at best during the winter months,” said Steve Froehler, Director, LCO Technologies. “Our electronic controller provides MODBUS capability to control the device with your existing SCADA systems, and our configuration software will allow operators and technicians to configure the system on their laptop computer or tablet.”

With new government mandates to encourage industry to reduce methane emissions from oil and gas operations by 45% by 2025, with respect to 2012 levels, the CROSSFIRE can help significantly reduce customers emissions level on a well pad.
