Generating steam is only half the problem, the real challenge is how it moves across the field.
The Challenge
SAGD facilities must balance steam production from multiple once‑through steam generators (OTSGs) with demand from dozens to hundreds of injection wells connected by kilometers of piping. Traditional swing‑boiler control strategies deliberately constrain steam production to protect header pressure, forcing generators to operate below capacity, while slow OTSG dynamics and manual steam allocation during upsets, such as well pad or boiler trips, drive header pressure instability and prolonged recovery.
The Solution
Spartan Controls implemented the SpartanPRO™ SAGD Steam Header Optimization Solution, which uses an advanced optimization strategy to automatically balance steam header pressure while maximizing steam production and injection. The solution replaces manual intervention with fully automated, high‑speed control of steam generation and injection.
The system uses prioritized steam injection rates and boiler feedwater flows as manipulated variables, enabling rapid and repeatable steam load allocation across all generators and wells. Header pressure can be safely increased to within 200–300 kPa of PSV limits, allowing steam to reach more distant injectors while maintaining system stability. During upset conditions, the solution responds immediately stabilizing the header in minutes rather than hours and minimizing lost steam production.

The Value
The SpartanPRO™ SAGD Steam Header Optimization Solution delivered clear, measurable results:
- Up to 3% production increase when the facility is steam‑short
- Up to 8% production increase when combustion air fan speed is limiting
- Up to 500 kPa increase in steam header pressure, improving steam delivery to distant wells
- Faster recovery from well pad and OTSG trips, stabilizing header pressure in minutes
- Reduced unplanned downtime, through improved OTSG stability
- Improved steam‑to‑oil ratios and chamber growth, supporting long‑term recovery
