The Challenge
The facility operated multiple chemical storage tanks with sloped bottoms and small process connections, making accurate level measurement difficult. Measurement reliability was further reduced by viscous and foaming products, preventing consistent inventory balancing across 17 previously uninstrumented tanks.
The Solution
Spartan Controls deployed a Rosemount™ 3408 field test unit on‑site to validate level measurement performance under real operating conditions. The radar was powered locally using a TREX communicator and commissioned at grade via Bluetooth, demonstrating fast, stable deployment without complex infrastructure.
Using Smart Echo Supervision, the Rosemount 3408 reliably tracked level through heavy foam and viscous product layers, confirming suitability for the application. The field test provided both technical validation and hands‑on operator training, building confidence in the technology prior to full rollout.

The Value
The solution delivered clear operational outcomes:
- 100% instrumentation coverage across 17 chemical storage tanks, standardizing level measurement across the site
- Reliable level measurement in challenging conditions, including sloped tanks, foam, and viscous products
- Improved inventory accuracy and tank reconciliation, reducing uncertainty in material balances
- Reduced operational risk, with consistent, repeatable level data
- Faster adoption and operator confidence, enabled by on‑site field testing and training
