Coal-Fired Power Plant Uses Smart Wireless and Abnormal Situation Analysis to Improve Efficiency
April 01, 2010
A coal-fired power plant in western Canada – 1050 MW total output – was looking to improve efficiency, and needed to monitor critical pressures, temperatures and flows to make informed decisions before implementing changes.
The customer was challenged with addition of multiple measurements without addition to plant wiring infrastructure. Cable and labour are expensive, so without a wireless solution the project would be uneconomical.
Smart Wireless, because it is cost-effective and easy to implement, met the requirements to add data points without adding wires.
With Smart Wireless the customer can measure data points that were not available. Small process changes yield large gains. Rosemount wireless technology and PlantWeb helped the customer minimize capital expenditure and increase plant availability and efficiency.

Spartan Controls worked with the customer to supply and commission the Smart Wireless solution.
