High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) is a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) designed and built in accordance with IEC 61511/61508 standards and requires a Safety Integrity Level (SIL) which measures the performance required for a safety instrumented function determining the likelihood and consequences of a safety event.
HIPPS reduce flare loading, provide additional protection of equipment and reduces the environmental impact of pressure venting. In existing plants it alleviates the need to replace/upgrade major portions of the flare system when adding new equipment or units, in new plants it removes the case of overpressure from flare loading design considerations.
This independent protection layer prevents over-pressurization bringing process to safe state when hazardous conditions occur, protecting downstream equipment against overpressure by closing the source.
